Clinical Situation Where Space Maintainer Is Indicated

Primary Dentition – Mandibular Teeth

  • Second primary molar is missing , treatment objective: prevention the first permanent molar from eruption in a tiping manner over the underlying premolar, device recommended: cantilever design of space maintainer (distal shoe space maintainer)
  • First primary molar is missing, treatment objective: prevention of mesial movement of the second primary molar, device recommended: band - loop design of space maintainer
  • First primary molars (both, right and left) are missing, treatment objective: prevention from mesial movement of the second primary molars, device recommended: two maintainers of band - loop design rather than lingual arch appliance where is a potential for permanent incisors to erupt later behind the lingual arch wire

Primary Dentition - Maxillar teeth
  • First primary molar is missing, treatment objective: prevention of second primary molar against mesial drifting and losing space, device recommended: band - loop design of space maintainer
  • First primary molars (both rigt and left) are missing, treatment objective: prevention of second primary molar from mesial drifting and losing space, device recommended: band - loop design of space maintainer rather than Nance removable appliance or Nance-type fixed bilateral appliance
  • Central and lateral primary incisors are missing, treatment objective: improve the esthetics, recommended device: provisional (minimum about six months) fixed or removable partial denture (anterior prosthesis)

Mixed Dentition – Mandibular Teeth
