The Topics of Pediatric Dentistry Related with Application of Dentapreg Strips are

Importance of Pediatric Space Management

The premature loss of primary teeth may cause seious and long lasting problems:
  • Loss of arch lenght resulting in crowding of the permanent dentition, impaction of permanent teeth
  • Esthetic difficulties
  • Crooked permanent teeth
  • Missalignment
  • Difficulty speaking trouble chewing
  • Malocclusion.

Space Maintainers

Dentapreg strips can be an excellent tool for several space management therapies maintaining existing space once primary teeth have been lost prematurely. These therapies are based on using different types of space maintainers. Dentapreg strips can be used to form space maintainers of different types instead of traditional materials (metal wires and bars).

Space Maintainers Made from Dentapreg Strips Benefit from Following Advantages

  • Simple procedure – not special tools and adhesive systems required, fast two handed procedure
  • First class esthetics, subtle but strong devices
  • Outstanding biomechanical capability
  • Metal free - no alergic
  • Patient friendly – non invasive, time saving
  • Structural a shape variability gives the dentists chance to choose strip appropriate to specific clinical situation
  • Good adhesion of the strip to the teeth and high stiffness of the strip provide appropriate rigid space maintainer structure which is necessary for reliable space management.

Variability of Space Maintainer Design and Dentapreg Strips

There are numerous types of space maintainers, they can be constructed differently and used in different part of mouth and different clinical situations. DentapregTM can be choosen for constructing required design utilising its variability in shape (flat, round), architecture (unidirectional, multidirectional), and reinforcement (retainer, bridge).

General Remarks to Space Maintainers

  • The best space maintainer is a primary tooth
  • Fixed space maintainers are prefered choice in relevant clinical situations
  • Removable space maintainers are less succesfull (patient cooperation required)

Clinical Situation Where Space Maintainer Is Indicated

Primary Dentition – Mandibular Teeth

  • Second primary molar is missing , treatment objective: prevention the first permanent molar from eruption in a tiping manner over the underlying premolar, device recommended: cantilever design of space maintainer (distal shoe space maintainer)
  • First primary molar is missing, treatment objective: prevention of mesial movement of the second primary molar, device recommended: band - loop design of space maintainer
  • First primary molars (both, right and left) are missing, treatment objective: prevention from mesial movement of the second primary molars, device recommended: two maintainers of band - loop design rather than lingual arch appliance where is a potential for permanent incisors to erupt later behind the lingual arch wire

Primary Dentition - Maxillar teeth

  • First primary molar is missing, treatment objective: prevention of second primary molar against mesial drifting and losing space, device recommended: band - loop design of space maintainer
  • First primary molars (both rigt and left) are missing, treatment objective: prevention of second primary molar from mesial drifting and losing space, device recommended: band - loop design of space maintainer rather than Nance removable appliance or Nance-type fixed bilateral appliance
  • Central and lateral primary incisors are missing, treatment objective: improve the esthetics, recommended device: provisional (minimum about six months) fixed or removable partial denture (anterior prosthesis)

Mixed Dentition – Mandibular Teeth

  • Second primary molar is missing, first permanent molar is fully erupted, treatment objective: prevention of first permanent molar from the bodily mesial migration and/or tipping, recommended device: band-loop design of space maintainer
  • Second primary molars (both left and right) are missing, both first permanent molars are fully erupted, recommended device: two maintainers of band-loop design

Mixed dentition – Maxillar Teeth

  • Second primary molar is missing, first permanent molar is fully erupted, treatment objective: prevention of first permanent molar from moving forward and lost of space for unerupted bicuspid, recommended device: band – loop design of space maintainer
  • Second primary molars (both, rigt and left) are missing, first permanent molars (both, right and left) are fully erupted, treatment objective: prevention of the first permanent molars from mesial movement or tipping, recommended device: band-loop space maintainer

Basic Designs of DentapregTM Space Maintainers

  • Cantilever (distal shoe) space maintainer
  • Band-loop space maintainer
  • Fixed Anterior Prosthesis
