Dentapreg - High Tech by ADM

Dentapreg product lines are based on a sopjisticated production technology developed originally for use in manufacturing aerospace structures such as the vertical stabilizer in Airbus A380 or liquid oxygen tabks on the Space Shuttle. ADM modified this technology to produce the same composition as in aerospace industries but compatible and with miniature dimensions for the use in dentistry.

Dentapreg is a fiber reinforced composite (FRC) based on glass or organic fibers embedded in either dental thermosetting resin or an engineering thermoplastic. Dentapreg is patented (U. S. Patent No. 4 894.012) for use in both active and passive dental appliances and devices. Fibers and resin are combined according to requirements of an actual application (device or appliance) determined by complicated biomechanical calculations and supported by in-vitro and in-vivo experiments.

ADM, a.s. is using in its computer modeling of bridges, retainers, splints and other products methods such as Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and software packages used by NASA, high-tech industries as well as top notch research universities. This results in a computer aided design of fiber architecture, i.e. spatial arrangement, most advantageous for a given application.

Dentapreg – Components

Sophisticated components currently used in Dentapreg strips create unique combination of properties which differs Dentapreg from the competition. There are three major items in every fiber reinforced composite (FRC) which have key influence on the final material:

  • Fibers
  • Fibers surface treatment
  • Resin (matrix)

Fibers

Depending on the type of Dentapreg, each strip contains between 4,000 – 8,000 special grade glass fibers. Each fiber has a diameter of 9 micrometers (0,009 mm) and spans the entire length of the strip. One could fit 10,000 such fibers in cross-section area of 1 mm2. Dentapreg is the only dental FRC on the market with fibers made from special glass with enhanced strength and special chemical composition providing extremely stability in the hydrolytic environment.

Fibers Surface Treatment

Fibers in FRC should form one material with resin. The stronger adhesion fibers to the resin the better utilization of fiberr properties in final composite. Most of the FRC in dentistry are using simply silanized fibers witch creates hydrogen bond between fibers and resin and not much stronger and hydrolytical stable chemical bond. Contrary to them Dentapreg uses its own cold Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapour Deposition (PECVD) technology to treat fibers for excellent and long lasting adhesion to the resin even in moist environment of mouth.

Resin (matrix)

Common solution for FRC in dentistry is using resin containing either monomer or monomer mixed with PMMA. The resin used to impregnate fibers in Dentapreg is not based on this approach and has been specially designed to allow easy handling, fast cure and good compatibility with a wide range of common dental composites and adhesives. Sophisticated technology of controlled preimpregnation provides perfect saturation of inter fiber spaces by resin.

Continuous Development and Improvement

Easy of use and highest reliability are of the major advantages of Dentapreg materials from ADM. Basic rule for every Dentapreg product is continuous improvement. ADM works together with leading orthodontics, prosthodontics, periodontics dental surgeons and material´s experts, using their suggestions and advices to modify both the materials and their final shape and form. This fruitful collaboration continues benefiting all the parties involved – patients, dentists and technicians.

Fast and Easy Office and Lab Procedures

Our goal is to give dentist and technicians high-tech products without restricting their creative freedom in forming the final appliance. Unlike other product using dry fibrous reinforcements, Dentapreg materials are in the form of “prepregs”, known well to aerospace industry. There is no need to wet any rope, tape or ribbon with resin using Dentapreg. Everything has been done by ADM before individually wrapping the “prepregs” and placing them in the commercial package. As a result, forming a provisional bridge, retainer or stabilizing traumatized or reimplanted tooth is very similar to using Scotch tape. Our quest to help dentist and technicians to simplify indicated procedures, reduce chair or lab time for these procedures can result in increase revenue and a case load of a common dental practice. Interestingly, at the same time, a quality dental care can become available to a larger portion of the population with lower disposable income by facilitating high quality and modern dental care in a less expensive setting.

Dentapreg Is Patient Friendly

Following needs of ultimate user – patient – are considered the most important:
  • Minimal or noninvasivity
  • Excellent clinical performance of Dentapreg device/appliance
  • First class esthetics
  • Time saving procedures
All Dentapreg materials are designed to be transparent or translucent blending smoothly with the natural color of teeth. Excellent physical properties of ADM´s composites allow for forming of miniature appliances and, thus, further contributing to the overall premium appearance.
